What it is.

JetBrains shipped the AI Assistant in 2023 and Junie, its multi-step agent, in 2024. The integration runs inside every IntelliJ-family IDE — IntelliJ IDEA, WebStorm, PyCharm, GoLand, RubyMine, Rider — and uses the IDE's semantic index for grounding. Mellum is JetBrains' own completion model, trained on permissively licensed code.

Where it fits.

Engineering teams already paying for IntelliJ or PyCharm. The IDE's semantic index is the moat — JetBrains knows the full type system, call graph, and refactoring surface in ways VS Code-based assistants do not. Strong in Java, Kotlin, and JVM shops. Junie agent closes the gap with Cursor Composer on multi-step tasks.

Use cases
  • Native IDE assistance across IntelliJ family
  • Inline completion and chat
  • Refactoring with full IDE semantic understanding
  • Junie agent for multi-step tasks
Strengths
  • Semantic grounding deeper than any VS Code-based assistant
  • Native across the full JetBrains IDE family
  • Mellum model addresses copyright procurement questions
Considerations
  • Junie agent UX still trails Cursor and Windsurf in polish
  • Buyer typically needs an existing JetBrains licence

Frequently asked.

Is JetBrains AI free?

There is a free tier with usage limits. Pro and Ultimate unlock higher quotas and frontier-model routing. AI Assistant is bundled into JetBrains' All Products Pack for many enterprise buyers.

What is Junie?

JetBrains' multi-step coding agent, shipped in 2024. Comparable in scope to Cursor Composer or Copilot Workspace — assigns the agent a task, reviews a diff.

Which model does JetBrains use?

Claude, GPT-5, and Gemini are routable. Mellum, JetBrains' own model, handles inline completion by default to keep latency low.
